Deciding what images to use
In today's blog entry, I will be discussing how I selected the pictures that I will be posting. I've decided to post six photos in this entry that I picked out myself from among 10 that I took whenI went to Awash Miami restaurant. Each photo captures different aspects of the experience, from ambiance and architecture to presentation of food. Since I only have a choice of six pictures, I want to be thoughtful and methodical about which ones are goingto get edited out. I'm hoping that I can display the restaurant in itsbest light, the culture of fun, specialty foods, and overall dining experience. I'll be trying to get a balance of variety and story-telling—some pictures might zoom in on particular dishes, somemight be more about the atmosphere or the patrons at the restaurant. In my next blog post, I’ll be working on selecting a magazine cover, which will be another exciting step in this journey. For now, though, let’s dive into picking the best six images for this post!
The second image stands out for its high-angle shot thatbeautifully captures the ambiance of a traditional Ethiopian coffee area. The angle allows the audience to take in the elaborate setup, highlighting the importance of coffee in Ethiopia as a culture. The framing ensures that every detail, ranging from the coffee ceremony equipment to the overall atmosphere, can be viewed, contributing to the authenticity of the experience.
The fifth photograph exceeds the others in providing a full pictureof the area, pulling the viewer into the Ethiopian coffee culture. It goes beyond the coffee setup by incorporating the background, providing a sense of place that invites the audience into a realEthiopian coffeehouse. The wide angle is necessary in portrayingthe depth of the cultural experience.
The sixth photo is especially relevant as it records a small butimportant detail: the jug and bowl of water on the table. These are traditionally used in Ethiopia for washing one's hands before meals or coffee ceremonies, and they symbolize hospitality and cleanliness. The inclusion of this detail adds depth to the photo, highlighting cultural practices that could easily be overlooked. The eighth picture is captivating as it is focused on the bar and the mirror with the antique items adorning it. This reflection adds depth and character, with a tale to share about the past of Ethiopia through the artifacts strategically placed there. These antiques provide the area with an additional authenticity, as if it isa slice of the past that has been kept intact. The ninth photograph successfully portrays Ethiopia's history and culture by showing posters and paintings. The visual itemsprovide context, giving a glimpse into the nation's heritage and artwork. The combination of cultural symbols and traditionalartwork makes for a visually interesting and historically informative photograph. And last but not least, the tenth photo is needed because of its carefully selected vantage point, which captures the entire restaurant. The composition features diners in the process of sharing a meal together, emphasizing the shared experience of Ethiopian dining. From this vantage point, the observer couldimagine walking into the place and seeing the vibrant atmosphere firsthand. The photo just conveys the hospitable nature and warmwelcoming for which Ethiopian restaurants are famous.
